HOT NEWS : Alex Ferrari and Jorge F. Rodriguez have been invited to be a part of the prestigious NALIP: Latino Producers Academy™. We will have a chance to short four scenes from the feature version of B R O K E N in order to show studios our project. Wish us luck!!!

The revelations of the 2000 census about America ’s current ethnic make-up, and the companion statistics from Professor Chon A. Noriega and the National Hispanic Media Coalition about the percentage of minorities who work in mainstream and independent media point to a gap: too few Latino producers, directors, writers, actors and other technicians work in film, television and media arts professions. NALIP is committed to investigating and improving access and opportunities at all points of the media product pipeline, starting at the beginning: how we train our next generation of media makers and how we educate emerging and mid-career professionals.

NALIP’s Latino Producers Academy™ offers to our makers a ten-day intensive course that covers a range of production skills and draws on the expertise of independent film and television producers and executives who are available to mentor and support our makers. Our goal with the Latino Producers’ Academy™, in this and future years, is to encourage a diverse and talented group of producers and directors who will create new and greater programming achievements in film, broadcasting and media arts.

In both 2003 and 2004, thirty-five participants were selected from a competitive field of applicants. The location was Tucson , Arizona – isolated enough to encourage total immersion but near enough to media centers like Los Angeles and New York so that instructors and funders have easy access to participate. The Latino Producers’ Academy™ program was developed for producers who create or intend to create feature films, documentaries, and series or other works for network, cable or public television. We see it as an opportunity for these producers to work intensively on the skills that will benefit them most, through classes and through direct contact with talented industry professionals. The definition of "producer" includes producer/writers and producer/directors who work locally as well as nationally, in all genres of programming, whether video, film, and interactive media, studio-based television as well as field production. We encourage partnerships between producers and directors in both documentaries and feature teams.

The 2006 Latino Producers Academy™ introduced a curriculum available to select producer/director teams in film and documentaries. It is modeled closely on the Sundance Filmmaker Labs, and by bringing directors to the LPA to participate in the lab, the program will advance those features projects that have rewritten scripts, a director commitment and cast/fundraising plans, plus documentary projects in rough cut stage. The Aug. 3-12 intensive program included direct professional mentoring around specific projects with casting and production planning professionals. 3 scenes were selected and ‘cast’ out of the Academy Repertory Company, rehearsed and shot with a professional crew, edited, scored and critiqued by the Academy fellows. Documentary projects were reviewed and revised, with specific tutorials on storytelling, special effects, clearances, outreach and scoring of works-in-progress, plus fundraising for completion funds. Unlike other LPA years, Fellows from earlier Academies could apply to the 2005 and 2006 Academies provided their projects have advanced through development and attached a director.

In 2006, we will offer a combination of the first 3 years’ programs: works-in-progress documentaries will be included along with developing projects; producers without directors will attend alongside feature producer/director teams.

The LPA continues to assemble an esteemed advisory board of industry professionals plus graduate school educators at UCLA, Columbia College Chicago, UT Austin , University of Arizona and Arizona State in an effort to provide the most effective curriculum for post-graduate Latino/a media professionals in need of additional support, mentoring and information to realize their first and second creative projects.

REVIEW: The guys for THE MOVIE BAR did a killer review of BROKEN:"Kudos to Alex Ferrari and Jorge Rodriguez for not only creating a superior short that will translate to one damn good feature film (coming soon, check out their website for more details) but also for the DVD presentation of the film. The DVD has over three hours of features, taking you through all steps of the production process. This DVD is a perfect catch for would be filmmakers because not only does the film prove that an $8,000 dollar budget can produce major results, the DVD shows you how it can be accomplished in great detail. Highly recommended."

REVIEW: The dudes for FILM FANADDICT did a rockin review of BROKEN:"BROKEN is a very promising first effort from director/writer Alex Ferrari. He’s currently working on a feature-length BROKEN, and if it retains the same style as the short it will definitely be worth checking out. Many viewers are reluctant to buy short films on DVD, but The Enigma Factory has gone above and beyond in making this purchase worthwhile. The shorts about filmmaking are a must see for any aspiring indie filmmakers."

INDIE FILM CONFERENCE: UPDATE: B R O K E N has been invited to the Ruff CUTZ Indie Film Conference in Boston, MASS. We will be screening BROKEN there and they have also invited Alex Ferrari and Jorge Rodriguez to speak at the conference.

What is Ruff Cutz?

Image Icon Entertainment (IIE) wanted to showcase one of four short film projects locally in New England to the indie film community and network affiliates made in the past few years. Then and idea sparked. IIE didn't want to hinder their chances of also submitting their films to key film festivals across the world, as many have require that the official film cannot premier anywhere else. However! A rough cut is permitable to showcase. So, in August 2006, what started out to be the first showings of the short film "Last Call", IIE decided to also hold an event where other filmmakers that would also like to showcase their film project to an wide audience can participate. IIE invited all the those in their network, investors, distributors, filmmakers to attend. In the process (as things often go) one thing lead to another, and the 1st annual Ruff Cutz Indie Film Conference was created, being well received since being announced June 2006.

The conference will be broken up into two sessions. During the day several key speakers will offer individual presentations on the success in their field. We'll be putting the final itinerary of presenters together throughout the month of June. There will be a total of 6 (you can check the Presenters page for posted updates and info). Starting at 11am individual presenters will begin giving presentations and fielding questions for 1 hour sessions. Each presenter has something unique to offer in their presentation (for example: Warren Goz focuses on the benefits and structures for financing film, television, and other audiovisual content utilizing recent changes in U.S. tax law that permits producers to take full advantage of tax benefits at the federal, state, and local levels).
At the end of each hour there will be a 10 minute break, *food will also be provided before and during the day's events of the conference. At the end of all individual speaker's presentation all speakers will assemble at one panel discussion for a power conference, in a James Lipton/Bill Maher type setup for an audience (this alone will be fantastic). There they will discuss the growth and development of independent film and field questions. Following the last power panel discussion there will be a "meet and greet" before the evening session of the conference.

The evening event will officially open at 6pm. The evening session will have several AV setups and marquees stations for viewing film projects and learning more about them as the filmmakers will either be present and/or have press and media its available at each station. Think art museum, only with a film showcases instead of paintings and sculptors. Image Icon Entertainment will be presenting a "rough cut" premier of their short film "Last Call" and also some of our direct affiliates projects (for a itinerary of films they will be posted on the SCHEDULE page). There will be excellent *food & hour d'oeuvres offered to guest in the evening.

A portion of all proceedings will go to two charities we've selected that evening (featured on the Charities page). If you can't make the conference and you'd still like to make a 100% donation toward the organization, you can go to the Charities page to do so. The rest of monies raised goes to the cost of the event and to production of future film projects that we select to produce for indie filmmakers and screenwriters. and bar services available through out the evening. Presenters for that day will also be there for the evening session of the conference.
Get your tickets in advance as limited space is available. See you there!

Alex Ferrari & Jorge Rodriguez will be attending.

In fact, the DVD is a film school for those interested in how to put together a good film with little money. Machine gun fire, thrown knives, fight scenes..it's amazing. FESTIVAL: Film Festival UPDATE: B R O K E N is an "Official Selection" of the Back Alley Film Festival in Tucson, Arizona.

"The Back Alley Cinema" is a venue which co-founder Erik Hulten and I have created. In reality it is nothing more than a huge white square painted on a large brick wall in an alley. We painted a mural and gave it a title. But, when the sun goes down the images fly. It's that grass roots type of cinema that gives it a great feeling.

FESTIVAL: Film Festival UPDATE: B R O K E N is an "Official Selection" of the Big Sur Film Festival in Big Sur, CA.

Showcasing the best of short films from all over the world we are interested in films that are bold and uncensored, films that invite us into your world, that will shock us, madden us, make us cry and laugh, films with moments that are serendipitous, interesting, candid or moving. There is no particular theme for this inaugural year. We like pop-culture, erotica, ecology, and enjoy brilliantly crafted stories. We are not interested in work that is clever at the expense of substance.

The Big Sur Short Film Screening Series is produced by the Henry Miller Memorial Library and since both Henry Miller and Anaïs Nin worked with erotic and sexual subjects, our series welcomes the presentation of frank sexuality as long as it is intrinsic to a film/story. While we enjoy a wide variety of film, the work should be entertaining and engaging; we are not putting together an audience endurance test. Very short pieces are welcome, as are fresh faces and first-time filmmakers.

We're looking for films in the drama, comedy and documentary genres. The screenings are presented outdoors using a digital projector and DVD/VHS player. We are not boasting about "industry professionals" in our festival staff or huge audiences with whom to network and establish connections for future production $$'s.

We are boasting about one of the most beautiful places in the world to enjoy film (and some "industry professionals" living in the neighborhood), state of the art digital equipment (both image and sound), the never ending source of inspiration provided by Henry Miller's work, and the worldwide attention we are receiving despite being a relatively small non-profit.

FESTIVAL: Film Festival UPDATE: B R O K E N is an "Official Selection" of the Ozone Film Festival in Covington, Louisiana.
Using the intimate and historic setting of Covington, Louisiana, the Ozone Film Festival (OFF) will open its fourth year on April 21, 2006 to highlight local, regional and national films by amateur and professional filmmakers.

OFF will present short films under the stars at Haik Park's outdoor venue and feature films showcased at the Historic Covington Hall. Documentaries will be shown continuously at The Green Room with live music capping OFF every evening of the festival.

OFF will provide workshops to audiences interested in learning the techniques and practical tools of film production from professional artists. Workshops will be conducted during the day at the St. Tammany Art Association - all walkable in this 1813 community just 50 miles north of New Orleans.

OFF promotes the film and video industry in Covington and Southeast Louisiana, highlighting the resources of the area as ideal for film and video projects, and building partnerships between the creative and business communities. If you've seen Dead Man Walking or Eve's Bayou, then you've seen Covington on film -- and so has the rest of the world (that's good for business).

OFF creates networking opportunities within the industry. Although the focus is on regional work, the festival's first year featured the world premiere of Steven Shainberg's Secretary and in 2003 featured Moving August by California director Chris Fink. The 2005 festival headliner was Shainee Gabel's, A love Song for Bobby Long, starring John Travolta and Scarlett Johansson. OFF seeks independent filmmakers no matter where they're from, helping local artists to expand their reach while exposing their work.

FESTIVAL: Film Festival UPDATE: B R O K E N is an "Official Selection" of the Swansea Bay Film Festival in the UNITED KINGDOM.
The contribution made by South Wales to the entertainment industry over the past 50 years alone is second to none, need we quote the names … Milland, Burton, Hopkins, Spinetti and Catherine Zeta Jones, our latest Oscar winner.

The talents of the Welsh are not just confined to the bright side of the camera lens. To match the stars of the screen the stars who wield the pen are also amongst the world greats.. Dylan Thomas, Emlyn Williams, John Ormond and the relative youngster Russell T Davies. With that kind of talent and heritage, its high time Swansea had a major event celebrating film.

The Swansea Bay Film Festival is a celebration for filmmakers, video artists and those working with the 'moving image' from around the world and around the corner. This is the festival that honours the individual voice. Its mission is to provide a worldwide public forum for independent and experimental film makers and to offer educational outreach. Created as an alternative to commercial cinema and mainstream film festivals, our week-long festival aims to be enlightening as well as entertaining. The inaugural Swansea Film Festival will run Saturday June 3rd until Friday June 9th 2006.

The Academy of Media, Recording, Interactive, Televisual & Stage Arts (AMRITSA) are organising the event and the festival's Special Selection Committee will comprise seasoned Filmmakers, representatives from The City & County of Swansea, The Dylan Thomas Centre, The Swansea Arts Forum Trust and The Department of Adult & Continuing Education at Swansea University (DACE). This group will expand over the coming months and further advise on programme events and some aspects of the competition judging. The event programme will be varied and hopefully attract a high standard of entries - especially from Wales. The growing impact of the media sector in the spectrum of economic activity in South Wales is gathering pace and the total workforce in these cultural sectors now outstrips those working in the older traditional industries.

The Swansea Bay Film Festival will be June 5, 2006. For more info goto: http://www.swanseafilmfestival.com

REVIEW: Film site DVDDude did a cool review of BROKEN "Ultimately, Broken is interesting and I could certainly see Ferarri doing more with this world he has created. Normally, I do my best to try to document and comment on all of the special features on a disc. Usually this isn't a problem, but on Broken, it's simply impossible. There is just a ton of material here. Alex Ferrari documented everything and anything that went into producing and marketing his film, and he's made a great deal of it available here on this disc. The result is, quite literally, a lesson in guerilla filmmaking."

PRESS RELEASE: VISUAL EFFECTS FOR INDIE FILMS - After all the amazing support and attention the break-through project "B R O K E N" has recieved, we decided to open a visual effects house that would target the independent film community. We found that visual effect is one of the most over looked elements in an indie film and we want to fill the gap. We call it "Numb Robot!" Official Website: http://www.numbrobot.com

Numb Robot is a visual effects company that specializes in conceptual design, title sequences, storytelling, poster design, commercials and independent films. Our main focus is to bring big budget visual effects to the small indie film. We believe that just becasue you have a small budget your project should still look like a million bucks!

The founder Alex Ferrari is a director/editor/visual effects artist based in South Florida with over 10 years in the post production business. Their spotlight project is the indie film "B R O K E N." This $8000 short film has over 100 visual effects shots and has played in over 35 international film festivals.

Work done: compositing, matte painting, title sequence, visual effects, concept art, storyboards, 3D animation and poster design.

Recent projects: "PUSH" Chazz Palminteri and Michael Rapaport lend tough-guy swagger to this gritty drama about the freefall descent of three twenty -something preppies into a world of criminality. Also starring Otto Sanchez (Bad Boys II, Oz),Chad Lindberg (Fast and the Furious), Charlotte Ayanna (Training Day).

Work done: compositing, matte painting, title sequence, visual effects, concept art, storyboards, additional editorial and poster design.

---------------------

Also just finished in indie adventure film "The Painted Forrest" staring William Sanderson (Deadwood, Blade Runner). A group of paintball-playing kids battle against bullies for the forest while attempting to prevent two thieves from stealing gold treasure rumored to be entombed inside a sacred Indian burial mound.

Work done: compositing, rig removable and visual effects.

FESTIVAL: Film Festival UPDATE: B R O K E N is an "Official Selection" of the Palm Beach International Film Festival in West Palm Beach, FL.
Founded in 1996, The Palm Beach International Film Festival (PBIFF) was the brainchild of local business and civic leaders who felt a film festival would offer an exciting cultural venue for the community, be a tremendous fundraiser for film and TV education and would also provide an excellent opportunity to introduce filmmakers to the area's resources. The PBIFF celebrates both the history and the future of the film industry with seven days of world premieres, special events, seminars, feature, short films and documentaries.

In 2003 PBIFF became a "Competitive" Festival; joining the ranks of other great film events such as: Sundance, Cannes, Toronto and Venice. The PBIFF has enjoyed a remarkable level a success to date. While competing with over 1500 similar events, PBIFF has created a special niche within the film industry and is listed as one of the top 25 film festivals in the world. Unlike many festivals around the country, the PBIFF has dedicated itself into making a difference in the lives of young people by helping to fulfill their dreams in the world of film. Proceeds generated each year go to the Palm Beach County Schools to provide new technologies for optimal learning in the form of grants and scholarships.

The Palm Beach Film Festival will be April 20-28, 2006. For more info goto: http://www.pbifilmfest.org

REVIEW:
Film site Pulp Movies did a killer review of BROKEN "Visually, it’s fantastic, with production values as high – if not higher – than anything you will see in more mainstream films. The washed out cinematography is reminiscent – in some ways – of Sin City, with the odd flash of colour standing out against a near monochrome background. The acting is consistently impressive. But it’s in the visual effects and the action sequence that the film really does deliver. The effects, throughout, are incredible and it’s difficult to believe that all this was achieved with only $8,000 – every last cent has clearly made its presence felt" - Check out the whole story: Pulp Movies

REVIEW:
Film site Extraordinary Movie and Video Guide did a review of BROKEN " Alex Ferrari probably has given an enormous amount of hope to aspiring, young filmmakers with his short film Broken. Broken is a great example of pushing the borders of shoestring budget filmmaking, when it comes to looks of the film. Great fun, and one can learn a lot from it too." - Check out the whole story: Extraordinary Movie and Video Guide

REVIEW:
Killer Indie film site Microfilmmaker did a review of BROKEN " An excellent first film, this short breaks down the barriers of what can be accomplished in the realm of action and suspense at the micro-budget level. As other filmmakers build on the work of Mr. Ferrari, Mr. Rodriguez, Mr. Falcon, and all the other folks that made this film possible, this may prove to be one of the most inspirational short films for our cause in quite some time! I've seen this short over ten times and I notice something new each time. While it does not answer almost any of the questions it raises, it definitely makes you appreciate what these young filmmakers accomplished for our art and makes you look forward to seeing a full-length feature." - Check out the whole story: MicroFilmmaker.com
